Today’s verses bring before us Jesus’...

He (Jesus) prayed that if it were possible the hour might pass from him. And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Take this cup away from me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what you will.
Mark 14:35.36.

Today's verses bring before us Jesus' last hours before the cross. We can hardly conceive what His approaching death meant for Him. There would be terrible, physical pain, for an agonising death on the cross was to be His lot.

It was not for this reason that Jesus prayed that the hour should pass from Him, if that were possible. The true reason was: He was to be "made sin". He would suffer God's judgment over the sinful on their behalf, although they deserved it. That was what troubled the soul of the sinless One. So He exclaimed "with vehement cries and tears" (Hebrews 5:7): "Father, all things are possible for you. Take this cup away from me!"

All things are indeed possible for God. But it was not a question of God's power now. Jesus would not even use His own power in this matter. So He added, "If this cup cannot pass away from me unless I drink it, your will be done" (Matthew 26:42). There was no other way, for it concerned our guilt before God. In no other way could mankind be brought into a relationship with God.

Through His power God might have taken that cup away from Him, but not in His love towards us. So the Lord Jesus Christ left the garden where He had prayed to go to the cross, where He sacrificed His own life to open the way for us to come to God.

Today's reading: 1 Chronicles 5:1-26 · Psalms 80:1-8

NEGATIVE LIVING

Life comprises of positive and negative elements. As a matter of necessity, it is not good for someone to opt for negative living. The fact that Jesus Christ was destined to die for the sin of the whole world does not exonerate Judas Iscariot from the evil that led him to the idea of betraying the King of Glory....More
