Thoughts on the Gospel of John (117)

Then Jesus said to them, A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light. These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and was hidden from them.
John 12:35.36.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (117)
Jesus had said that He would be "lifted up from the earth", i.e. crucified. The multitude was confused and wondered, "Who is this Son of man?"

As in many other situations, the Lord gave them no direct answer, but dealt with the attitude of mind that lay behind their questioning. They were groping in the dark, although the light was in their midst. John the Baptist had already pointed out the true light. He himself was a mere lamp, not the light itself. Jesus Christ was the Light of the world; His works testified the fact (cf. ch. 1:7.8; 8:12). So there should not have been any uncertainty as to the Person of Jesus. Too many evaded the light consciously in their wish to lead their life according to their thinking and not according to God's standards (cf. ch. 3:20).

It is no different today. Without faith in the Son of God people go their own way blindly and aimlessly. God's claims offend them, and they reject the Son of God. Many who call themselves Christians even deny Jesus' deity, His resurrection and the divine inspiration of the Bible, thus refusing the light, yet imagining themselves to be knowledgeable. What does the Lord say to such? "You do not know that you are poor, blind and naked. I counsel you to buy from me eye salve that you may see" (Revelation 3:17.18).

THE SACRIFICES IN THE BOOK OF NUMBERS (8)

Whoever touches the body of anyone who has died, and does not purify himself That person shall be cut off from Israel. He shall be unclean, because the water of purification was not sprinkled on him.

GOD HAS A SUBSTITUTE

One thing we need to learn in today's reading is that God always has a substitute. If God says He wants you, rejoice! However, be careful, because even as He is choosing you, He has already prepared a substitute.
