The gospel in the jungle (1)

Look to me, and be saved, all you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.
Isaiah 45:22.

The gospel in the jungle (1)
Alan is a university lecturer, Ian is a missionary. The two are neighbours living in a city in Columbia. Alan is annoyed with the missionaries in the land: "They ought to stop altering the culture of the Columbians." However, he wanted to accompany Alan when he visited the Christians in the jungle. Alan's motive was to discover the jungle. Ian warned his neighbour that hour-long walks through dangerous country were necessary before they reached their destination.

"And every evening you will hear a Bible study," Ian announced. - "No problem!" Alan retorted ironically, "I can stop up my ears so as not to hear anything." Ian thought about the matter and prayed to God. Then he decided to take his neighbour with him.

The day they set out they reached a hut in the middle of the jungle after a strenuous walk. Alan was surprised that the inhabitants were happy and content despite their poverty. They had welcomed the two heartily and shared a simple meal with them.

In the evening neighbours joined them. The meeting began with a hymn. Then they discussed the Bible. Their light was a home-made candle that consisted of a wick in a vessel filled with oil. So that Ian could read from the Bible, Alan had to hold the candle with one hand; with the other he waved away clouds of insects that were attracted by the light. So Alan couldn't possibly stop up his ears!

Then it was time for the visitors to sleep on a very primitive bed. The next morning another strenuous walk awaited them.

(to be concluded tomorrow)

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 18:1-34 · Revelation 6:1-8

One outstanding need that divine midwives must satisfy is to have their names written in the Book of Life. This is the most important book in the universe. Given modern trends and need for details, most institutions have various books in which records are kept and can be retrieved in years to come. Every...More
