For days a storm had been...

Truly my soul silently waits for God; from him comes my salvation.
Psalm 62:1.

For days a storm had been raging over the sea, throwing up enormous waves and shaking the ship like a nutshell. Not a star to be seen at night; gloom also dominated the day. Even the sailors, used to stormy conditions, had given up hope. They had taken down the rigging and thrown all ballast overboard, including some of the ship's equipment. But all their efforts proved vain: they had no chance against such a storm. The ship drifted along, a plaything at the mercy of the waves. All hope had been given up.

Just one Jewish man, who seemed to be at the centre of things, radiated an inexplicable calm. Didn't he fear for his life? What made him so fearless and composed? It must have to do with his faith that he was to testify in Rome. Now, after they had eaten nothing for days, he stood up and encouraged them: "There stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve, saying, Do not be afraid, Paul. God has granted you all those who sail with you. Therefore take heart, men, for I believe God that it will be just as it was told me (Acts 27:23-25).

They took courage. Would that unknown God save them indeed? Paul spoke with great assurance, and God showed His power. He stood by His servant and His promise. They suffered shipwreck, but all 276 passengers and crew reached the safety of an island.

Even today we can confidently entrust our fate to our God.

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 26:1-15 · Revelation 12:10-17
