Jesus Christ is alive, but no longer lives...

The angel said to them (the shepherds), Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.
Luke 2:10.11.

Jesus Christ is alive, but no longer lives among us on earth; so He is not visible. No modern media nor any painting or sculpture can present Him visibly, for any artistic creation of His Person is fantasy without any reliable historical source. Yet how that Man changed the world!

The well-known Christmas story tells of His birth. Leave aside all the additions made to it and come to the point. Outside the gates of an insignificant town named Bethlehem some watchful shepherds are doing their nightly duty as usual. Then suddenly an angel, a messenger from God, appears. The shepherds have never experienced anything like it before. That they are afraid is understandable.

The message the angel gives them, however, causes great joy. Christ, the Lord, has been born! God's appointed time to fulfil His promise has come. Great changes will take place. For one thing, King Herod fears that he might lose his right to reign.

Since then Bethlehem has become world famous. Almost everyone knows the name of that small place. But the most important thing about it is: what happened there has given poor, guilty persons the hope of salvation, a prospect that none other could provide either then or nowadays, "nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). That is the truly joyful aspect of Christmas!

Today's reading: 2 Chronicles 32:16-33 · Revelation 19:1-10
