I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me.
2 Timothy 4:7-8

The Dane, Tycho Brahe (1546-1601), was an astronomer and the greatest astrologer of his time. When he died, not only the most famous scientist in Europe was laid to rest, but also the order of earth and sky as it had been since ancient times. For forty years, Brahe had researched, observed, discovered, mapped, measured, determined and described stars. According to his thinking, in contrast to the ideas of ancient times, all planets revolved around the sun, but the sun itself orbited around the earth.

Johannes Kepler (1571-1630), with whom Brahe worked for the last two years of his life, was to help his world view achieve a breakthrough. Brahe died with the words, "May I not have lived in vain!"

Isn't that what each of us wishes for? Not to live in vain ... to leave something behind ... not to be forgotten? The Bible says of a king, that he "to no-one's sorrow, departed" (2 Chronicles 21:20). A sad end! It looks quite different when someone can write the words of our verse of the day towards the end of his life.

The apostle Paul, from whom this verse comes, had been stopped in his tracks as a fanatical persecutor of Christians by Jesus Christ Himself when he was on his way to Damascus. Then there was a 180 degree turnaround: he no longer fought against Christ, but for Him. In doing so, he had one goal in mind: to soon be with Him in the glory of heaven.

This experience is available to everyone. When we entrust ourselves to Jesus, our life gets a clear perspective and we do not need to be afraid of dying.

Today's reading: Numbers 13:26-14:10 · Matthew 9:14-26
