The son of a civil servant is healed

Then Jesus said to him, Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.

Jesus said to him, Go your way; your son lives. So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way.

John 4:48, 50

The son of a civil servant is healed
Jesus Christ worked His miracles wherever He was received. When He was in Galilee, someone whose son was dying came to Him. This father had travelled about 30 kilometres because he hoped for help from Jesus.

The Lord put him to the test: "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe." Why did He do that? Didn't He see the need of the Father? He certainly did. But it was His intention that his faith should not be based on miracles, but on the word of the Lord.

In his distress, the father repeated his request: "Sir, come down before my child dies!" Then Jesus answered, "Go your way; your son lives!" Immediately the father set out for home, for he believed what the Saviour had told him. The next day his servants met him with the message, "Your son lives!" Then he learned that his son had become well the day before - from the very time Jesus had said to him, "Go your way; your son lives!" Through the father's obedience of faith the son became well. Subsequently, he and his family believed in the Lord Jesus.

Through this second sign in John's Gospel, Jesus revealed His glory as the Lord of the Old Testament: "I am the Lord who heals you" (Ex 15:26). Today, too, He frees anyone who takes Him at His word from the burden of sin and gives him new life.

Today's reading: Numbers 18:20-32 · Matthew 12:15-21

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
