The banquet of grace

A certain man gave a great supper and invited many.
Luke 14:16

The banquet of grace
To show people the grace of God, the Lord Jesus told a story that is still relevant today: A certain man invited many guests to a banquet. When everything was ready, his servant went to those invited and asked them to come.

This is how God invites people today to come to Him and accept His grace. Because His Son, Jesus Christ, accomplished the work of redemption on the cross, He is ready to receive all. He does not expect anything from them. They do not have to have a decent life or a record of good works. They can come just as they are.

But the guests in the story didn't accept the invitation to the banquet. With polite words, they made all kinds of excuses that people still give today as reasons to refuse God's grace for salvation.

Possessions, jobs or relationships with partners keep many people from accepting this invitation from God and believing in Jesus Christ. How sad when what is earthly, which passes away so quickly, is preferred to eternal salvation and fellowship with God!

For almost 2,000 years He has been inviting people to come to Him. Although many have already declined, His offer is still valid. Today we - you and I - are addressed. Happy is the one who accepts this invitation and comes into a right relationship with God!

Today's reading: Numbers 31:25-54 · Matthew 16:21-28

What shall the baptized for the dead do if those that are baptized rise not at all? Why also are they baptized for them?
(1 Corinthians 15:29)

Who are "the dead," and who are those "baptized for the dead"? The next verse gives an important hint: "Why do we also endanger ourselves every...More

KEEP YOURSELF HUMBLE

Several years ago, I was on a visit to a parish of our church in Ilesha (a town in southwest Nigeria) on the same day that a Bible Study was to take place. Because I wanted to be blessed, I sat down in the congregation waiting for the Bible study teacher to commence the lesson for the day. However, an overzealous...More
