Thoughts on the Gospel of John (130)

So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately.
John 13:31–32

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (130)
After Judas has gone out into the night, it becomes light in the upper room. The Lord can now speak freely to His disciples about the things that are dearest to His heart regarding His own. The attentive reader senses the unique character of the following chapters for their light and warmth. The farewell words of Jesus are profound and moving.

Jesus now speaks about Himself, His death and His ascension. Let us look at this in detail.

The Son of Man is glorified: When the Greeks came to Philip because they wanted to see Jesus, the Lord spoke of the hour in which the Son of Man was to be glorified. It was immediately clear that this meant His death (ch. 12:23–24). Never did the glory of the man Jesus Christ appear more clearly than in His death on the cross: His obedience, His love, His sinlessness, His devotion. How glorious Jesus is!

God is glorified in Him: Anyone who wants to contemplate God’s essence – He is light and He is love – looks to the cross of Calvary. There, God thoroughly judged His Son for sin (light), because He wanted to spare people and have them with Him in heaven forever (love). How glorious God is! (Cf. 1 John 1:5; 4:8, 16)

God will glorify Him immediately: The appropriate response of God to the atoning sacrifice of His Son is that Jesus Christ as man now occupies a glorious position at the right hand of God. With this, God immediately glorified His Son.

Today’s reading: Deuteronomy 4:15-28 · Matthew 21:23-32

GOD PROMOTES

When God set out to deliver the children of Israel from Egypt, it was to take them out of captivity and bondage and to lift them up. God has come to take you out of your current location in the miry clay to your promised land - a land flowing with milk and honey. This simply tells us that the God of Abraham, Isaac...More

TRAIN UP YOUR CHILD 1

One major undoing of modern civilized society is an abounding generation of untrained children. This trend did not just start, but has been on for some time now. The result is that many untrained children of few years back have become parents themselves. It is the multiplier effect of their lack of proper home...More

A LIBERAL HEART?

Read:
, God asked the widow to feed the prophet before taking care of herself. At the end of the day, what was not enough became more than enough. To what extent do you practice giving as an individual, family, church or nation?

Those who never give will continue to beg, if you desire to...More

Hebrews 11:24-28

Author Zora Neale Hurston wrote a book titled Moses, Man of the Mountain. Published in 1939, it retells the story of Moses and the Exodus. Hurston altered details of the story for her own purposes, weaving in allusions to African American history, folklore, and song. She reflected...More
