November 8, 2015 Today's reading: Numbers 16:23-50 And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men. And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker. Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people. Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of, they rent their clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out, And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein: Acts 14:11-15 Thoughts on the Book of Acts (116) Ancient legends from Lykaonia give reports of occasions when the gods, Zeus and Hermes, appeared in human form. The inhabitants of Lystra imagined one such visit from the gods then, so astonishing was the healing of the lame man. So they did not want to lose the chance of paying such noble visitors the respect due to them. The apostles refused any form of honour indignantly. They were not gods, nor semi-gods, as occurred in many Greek legends, but quite normal human beings. However, they preached the one true God, the living God who created the world and has the power to heal and save. This was the God, to whom honour should be shown; people should turn to Him. To do so they had to turn from the gods of their own devising, whom they had worshipped hitherto. They were "foreign idols" . (to be continued next Sunday) |
