November 10, 2015 Today's reading: Numbers 18 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Matthew 7:21 A born again Christian once made the acquaintance of an elderly man whose life had been full of suffering. The believer told that senior citizen of the love of Jesus, His sympathy and help, but the man didn't want to hear. He had been put off by the unacceptable life of a religious dignitary. The Christian tried to explain to him what differentiates true faith from an outward appearance of Christianity. "Imagine I were to steal your coat and, wearing it, committed a robbery. A witness saw me running away, but could not catch me. The police would have an important clue that would lead to you: your coat. What would you say if you were arrested for the robbery?" "I should deny it outright and say that I am not my coat. "Exactly! So you cannot mistake Jesus Christ for those who bear the name unjustly." This example made the old man think. At their next meeting, he asked the believer, "How can I become a true Christian?" The basis of the answer was this: "We must turn from a life of self-will to God, confessing our wrongdoings to Him and believing in Jesus and His work of redemption." When the two met again, the elderly man embraced the younger full of joy and said, "Thank you for showing me the way to God. Now I know that He has accepted me." And, pointing towards heaven, he added, "You really do wear His coat." |
