He who places his hope in God ...

You … through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
1 Peter 1:21

He who places his hope in God ...
A pithy saying expresses human hope: We should hope for the best, be prepared for the worst and take what comes. This attitude takes into account the whole range of what could come our way. But it gives neither stability nor perspective.

In view of the future, human beings are not in a position to offer real and secure hope. Only God can do that. He gives those who believe in His Son, Jesus Christ, a perspective that goes beyond death. The Lord Jesus Himself says: “And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day” (John 6:40).

Believing in Jesus Christ involves accepting Him as our personal Saviour, who laid down His life on the cross for our sins. With this step of faith we escape divine punishment and now possess a firm hope: that we will one day be with our Saviour in heaven.

For life on earth, God also gives us the right perspective. He doesn’t take away all our problems, but in every situation His promise is valid for us: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11).

How comforting that is!

Today’s reading: Deuteronomy 29:18-28 · Galatians 5:16-26

DIVINE CHAMPION 2

One attribute of a champion is strength. The divine champion is one who receives divine strengthening....More
