Thoughts on the Gospel of John (136)

Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves. Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.
John 14:11–14

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (136)
The words of Jesus are profound. They show that He not only became fully man, but that He is God at the same time. He is man and God in one person. Therefore, we are not surprised that people at that time said, “No man ever spoke like this man” (ch. 7:46).

How accommodating the Son of God is here! Although His words already make it unmistakably clear that He is the eternal Son, one with God the Father, He provides additional evidence of this: His works. These are unique, as the man born blind rightly confirmed: “Since the world began it has been unheard of that anyone opened the eyes of one who was born blind” (ch. 9:32).

The Lord announces that believers would do even greater works than He Himself did here on earth. This was literally fulfilled after the Lord ascended into heaven. We read of the apostles that their shadow healed the sick and that “handkerchiefs or aprons” were taken from their bodies to heal them as well. Or consider the 3,000 who came to faith through a single sermon (Acts 5:15; 19:12; 2:41). These “greater” works corresponded to the “greater” glory that Jesus now possesses in heaven.

Then He adds a special promise: if the disciples would ask anything “in My name” – that means, in full accordance with His will – then their prayers would be fulfilled. Wonderful blessing, which is still true today!

Today’s reading: Deuteronomy 33:13-29 · Ephesians 3:1-7

HOW PERSUADED?

In 2 Timothy 4:10, Demas - a co-labourer with Paul was floored by his love for the world. He became a victim of comfort. Today, many people are also becoming prayerless and shifting their or trust from God to uncertain riches. They are now tending towards the belief that money can fix everything. If you are in such...More

A LESSON FROM GOLIATH

At the first sight of David, Goliath despised him. He was amazed that the children of Israel could find no other man to fight him than a young boy. As if that was not enough, Goliath did not see any conventional weapon of war on David. So he asked, "Am I a dog?" The first lesson we have to learn from this story as...More

Forgive And Move On (2)

Anyone who starts ploughing and keeps looking back isn't worth a thing to God's Kingdom!' Luke 9:62 CEV

If you're wise, you'll do four things:

(1) Focus on the road ahead. By looking in the rear-view mirror instead of what's up ahead, you'll end up in a ditch. Focus on the fact you've...More
