November 15, 2015 Today's reading: Numbers 21:17-35 And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein: Who in times past suffered all nations to walk in their own ways. Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness. And with these sayings scarce restrained they the people, that they had not done sacrifice unto them. And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and, having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead. Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe. Acts 14:15-20 Thoughts on the Book of Acts (117) People in Lystra revered numerous gods, but not one true God who had created all things. God had indeed given only the people of Israel a special revelation of Himself; yet the other nations could have recognised His deity, if they had regarded the witness of creation (cf. ). Our Creator-God has in mind only the good of mankind. Instead of envying man's joy and happiness as other gods ostensibly did, He cares for their well-being. This message was welcomed. However, the people there were so rooted in idolatry that they again purposed sacrificing to God's servants. Soon after, jealous Jews from the cities previously visited by the apostles arrived and amazingly quickly changed the crowd's opinion, stoning Paul until he made no motion. However, it became clear that there had been genuine conversions in Lystra and that God had preserved Paul from death. (to be continued next Sunday) |

He simply studies an individual for a period of time and not long after, he identifies the fellow's weakness and capitalizes on it. Take for instance Peter. Satan discovered that Peter is a cowardly person-lacking in...More |
