For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.
1 Thessalonians 2:13

There are people who are convinced that the Bible is of human origin, and some even attribute it to the devil. The following story is 150 years old, but I am convinced that it is just as possible today.

On a ship, a preacher is talking to some passengers. In the process, they also come to talk about the Bible. One of the listeners remarks, “But Sir, the Bible is outdated and full of errors, a very bad and terrible book!”

The preacher replies, “I don’t want to argue with you. I’ll read you something from this book just once.” And he reads, “Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying: ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God’” (Matthew 5:2–9).

When he finished, he asked, “Well, Sir, what do you think of this text? Can a human being say such words? Can the devil speak like this? The Bible, the Word of God, proves itself. When you read it and let it speak to you, you feel its effect. They are not human words – here God Himself is speaking.”

Today’s reading: 1 Samuel 14:11-23 · Psalms 98:1-9

Not I but Christ

Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

Not I but Christ
I have heard it said, "People should be allowed to be themselves." But I can find no scriptural basis to support this statement, for freedom "to be myself" is to...More
