November 19, 2015 Today's reading: Numbers 24 And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. Luke 7:15 Christ, the Victor over death (1) Jesus, the Lord, raised three dead persons to life again, when He was here on earth: two young people and a grown man. In this way, He proved Himself to be the Victor over death, and that even before He Himself, through His own resurrection, made it indisputable that He is the Son of God (cf. ). Each of these three occurrences has its own lesson for us. Today's verse deals with a young man, the son of a widow in the town of Nain. This incident shows how through sin, no-one can be of any use to God. All are, in a spiritual sense, "dead in trespasses and sins" (Ephesians 2:1), a condition from which no effort on our part will free us. Nor can our fellowmen help; so the tender love of the man's mother was of no avail. One alone, the Lord Jesus Christ, had the power to say, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And, indeed, the dead man "sat up and began to speak". It was the first thing he did, so that people saw that he was alive. What he said is not reported. His words probably expressed his joy. That is just what we notice about those who have received a much more precious form of life, eternal life. Whoever belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ, should ask himself, "Have I given a joyful testimony of the eternal life I possess?" We should not hesitate to do so. It might awaken the wish in others to make the acquaintance of Jesus Christ. (to be continued tomorrow) |
