Today's reading: Numbers 27

But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.
Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

1 Peter 1:25; Matthew 24:35

The invincible Word
"The more you enjoy beating me, the more hammers you will wear out!" This epigram is printed beneath a 16th century engraving depicting an anvil in the form of a Bible being beaten with heavy blows by some blacksmiths. It reminds us of the constant attempts made to weaken, discredit and destroy the Bible. In different epochs, it has been burnt and criticised in numerous rationalist, pseudo-scientific works. Why such tenacity, if it is a mere book like any other? No, it is not an ordinary book, it is God's message to mankind. It has resisted and outlived all who have disparaged it. They have died, one after the other.
The Bible is still today the book that is most often printed; it is still the Word of God, "living and powerful" . The Bible is not a philosophical or moral treatise, nor a scientific or history book. It addresses our conscience and our heart, it responds to the need of the human soul. It makes known the wonderful Person of Jesus Christ, the Saviour.
"This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners" (1 Timothy 1:15).
"Receive with meekness the implanted word which is able to save your souls" (James 1:21).

HAZARDING LIVES FOR MISSIONS

Within the space of a few years after the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, the gospel about Him had reached Rome, Alexandria, Antioch and all the great cities in Europe, Africa and Asia. The gospel had made great inroads into the aristocracy and among intellectuals, and had already changed the lives...More
