Rude awakening

Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?
Acts 9:4

Rude awakening
On a crowded morning train, a passenger bumps into another passenger and swears at him for getting in his way. It is an unfortunate, thoughtless moment that usually has no further consequences. But what eyes this man makes when, an hour later, he sits opposite the one he insulted on the train at a job interview!

On his journey to Damascus, Saul also met a person he would never have expected. He was abruptly stopped in his persecution of Christians by a bright light from heaven. A voice addressed him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” When Saul asked, “Who are You, Lord?” he was answered, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting” (Acts 9:5).

Shocked, Saul had to realise that by persecuting the believers he had fought against the Son of God and thereby made himself guilty. This realisation led him to repentance. He saw that he was a sinner and needed the grace of God for his salvation. Thus, he came to personal faith in the Lord Jesus.

God desires that we come to the knowledge of the truth now. Through the gospel that He makes known, He wants us become aware of how wrongly we have behaved towards Him. In His grace He wants to lead us to repentance and faith in the Saviour, Jesus Christ, so that we do not have to meet Him as our judge.

Today’s reading: 1 Samuel 23:14-28 · Philippians 2:12-18

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

...when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem...
Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
