November 26, 2015 Today's reading: Numbers 29 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John 3:17-18 Our only chance Various religions proclaim a place between heaven and earth where believers who have not fulfilled the condition are assembled for a period that God alone determines in order to clear themselves of the hindrance before they enter paradise. Now who would need this second chance? Would unbelievers benefit from it? Which sins would be acceptable and which unforgivable? If I could bank on a second chance could I risk certain delinquencies today? For whom would Jesus' death be necessary and for which sins would it suffice? Who would devise such question, but someone wishing to add to the Word of God. The Bible which is acknowledged by all Christians, nowhere mentions this "place of a second chance", where we might round off our salvation. You can search for it in vain. Instead you will find God's grace offered to all. "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves;it is the gift of God"(Ephesians 2:8). The Bible proclaims and indeed assures us of a great salvation that takes no account of our works, our endeavours or our piety. The only condition for benefiting from it is recognising the sense of Jesus Christ's sacrifice at the cross. This salvation, which is offered freely and exclusively by God is the only means of knowing and enjoying peace with Him. |
