Fear of God

Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
Psalm 34:11

Fear of God
To fear God is to acknowledge Him as the authority over you and to honour Him by behaving well. We fear doing something that displeases Him.

So how can the fear of God show itself in our lives? Psalm 34 gives us a few points to help us:

Our speech: “Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit” (verse 13). Before we speak, do we always consider whether what we are about to say is true? And if it is true – is it perhaps going to harm someone? How quickly we dishonour our God through careless speech.
Our actions: “Depart from evil and do good” (verse 14a). This is very far-reaching. Every evil deed is an insult to God and therefore does not show the fear of God. If we were always aware that God sees and judges all our actions, we would be saved from many an evil deed. Furthermore, it is important to do what is good and to live righteously. The Roman centurion Cornelius is a good example for us. He was a righteous and God-fearing man who did good deeds to the Jewish people (Acts 10:1, 2, 22).
Our aspiration: “Seek peace and pursue it” (verse 14b). Are we among those who sow discord – or are we peacemakers? Our God is a God of peace. When we are peaceable, we honour Him and demonstrate that we fear Him.

Today’s reading: 1 Samuel 30:11-31 · Colossians 2:6-15

GOD PROMOTES

When God set out to deliver the children of Israel from Egypt, it was to take them out of captivity and bondage and to lift them up. God has come to take you out of your current location in the miry clay to your promised land - a land flowing with milk and honey. This simply tells us that the God of Abraham, Isaac...More

TRAIN UP YOUR CHILD 1

One major undoing of modern civilized society is an abounding generation of untrained children. This trend did not just start, but has been on for some time now. The result is that many untrained children of few years back have become parents themselves. It is the multiplier effect of their lack of proper home...More

A LIBERAL HEART?

Read:
, God asked the widow to feed the prophet before taking care of herself. At the end of the day, what was not enough became more than enough. To what extent do you practice giving as an individual, family, church or nation?

Those who never give will continue to beg, if you desire to...More

Author Zora Neale Hurston wrote a book titled Moses, Man of the Mountain. Published in 1939, it retells the story of Moses and the Exodus. Hurston altered details of the story for her own purposes, weaving in allusions to African American history, folklore, and song. She reflected...More
