Loneliness

Turn Yourself to me, and have mercy on me, for I am desolate and afflicted.
Psalm 25:16

Loneliness
More and more people are feeling lonely for a variety of reasons – in all age groups and social classes. What comfort does the Bible have for the lonely? First of all, every lonely person may turn to God again and again, as King David did when he felt lonely and miserable (cf. today’s verse). Knowing that God stands by me in every situation of life can be a great comfort on its own.

When reading the Bible, for example the Psalms, we encounter people who felt very lonely and came to God with their need. This is an incentive to us to do the same. In addition, God wants to keep us from becoming bitter or losing heart, by occupying us with His good thoughts. The Bible is truly an inexhaustible source of strength – especially for the lonely!

Moreover, it can be helpful to think that loneliness is not only caused by a lack of companions because we can also feel lonely when we have the impression that no one around us understands us.

And it is precisely this form of loneliness that Jesus Christ must have felt very deeply as a human being. How fiercely He was rejected by those to whom He showed love! In addition, His disciples surrounded Him without really understanding Him. Thus, the Lord Jesus was often all alone with His personal feelings. He can really sympathise with lonely people from His own experience.

Thus, anyone who feels lonely and belongs to the Lord Jesus may have this assurance: My Lord understands me, loves me, keeps me, can change circumstances and is with me in all situations in my life. I may always pour out my heart to Him. “For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand, saying to you, ‘Fear not, I will help you’” (Isaiah 41:13).

Today’s reading: 2 Samuel 23:13-39 · John 2:1-12
