Corinth was one of the most famous...

By Christ Jesus … you were enriched in everything.
1 Corinthians 1:5

Corinth was one of the most famous cities in the Roman Empire. Located at the intersection of important trade routes of ancient times, the flourishing port brought much wealth but also some sinister elements to the cosmopolitan city. The city was considered the epitome of a life of drunkenness and moral debauchery. In short, it was a commercial centre with all the evils of humanity, just as we find in society today.

And then the gospel came to Corinth, the good news that God would pardon even the most disreputable sinner and give him new life. Many people took this message seriously. No one needed to tell them that they were leading a bad life. They knew it themselves. They had also known for a long time that their previous life had not brought them any lasting satisfaction. None of them had become rich in happiness. No wonder that many accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour! Through Him their life received not only meaning and hope, but took a complete U-turn. They were no longer heading toward ruin, but toward a glorious future.

For the apostle Paul, who had brought the gospel to the Corinthians, their obvious conversion was so impressive that he thanked God for it again and again.

Today’s reading: 1 Kings 7:1-22 · John 6:16-24

Not I but Christ

Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

Not I but Christ
I have heard it said, "People should be allowed to be themselves." But I can find no scriptural basis to support this statement, for freedom "to be myself" is to...More
