A rule without exception

Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? No one!
Job 14:4

A rule without exception
Job’s statement is as clear as possible: If the parents are unclean, so are the children. What do we mean by “unclean”? Well, it means not pure, not perfect, and not blameless in the eyes of God. The Bible calls this “sinful”. Every sincere person will agree with this. Or who has the courage to claim that his parents are an exception to the above rule? And who wants to make us believe that he has never sinned? We are all sick in the same hospital. Which doctor can cure us?

When Jesus Christ lived on earth, He said to the self-righteous: “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick” (Luke 5:31). But for a person to go to the doctor, they must realise that something is wrong with them. You have to be ready to be helped. This is not necessarily pleasant, but it brings healing.

Jesus followed this up with, “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance” (Luke 5:32). With this, He put His finger on the sore spot. Each person has to acknowledge their own impurity, calling the evil by its name. To such He gives the promise, “the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out” (John 6:37). That is what we need: recognition, encouragement and acceptance. Whoever goes to Him, believes in Him, opens his heart to Him, surrenders himself to Him, and repents, the Lord will cleanse him of his sins and give him eternal life.

Today’s reading: 1 Kings 19:1-10 · John 12:27-36

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
