The busy commercial street is...

... whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.
Romans 3:14

The busy commercial street is noisy. Buses, cars and trucks form an endless chain, and pedestrians hurry past. Suddenly, some stop, because a man in torn clothes is walking along the side of the road, cursing loudly to himself, incessantly. This drowns out even the noise of the street. The meanest and dirtiest words come out of his mouth; there is no end to it, and the street is long.
Most passers-by shake their heads at the strange spectacle, but the Bible verse mentioned at the beginning comes to my mind. Surely the curser had drunk alcohol and had thus lost his inhibitions. But can such a thing bubble out of the mouth if it was not already deep inside in the heart?

Can a person produce such bad words if they don’t already have them in their vocabulary, or even in their thoughts? And how many curses are constantly uttered by people on all sorts of occasions! Perhaps this is a completely new thought for you: God takes note of every curse that is uttered. And He considers cursing as evil, as a sign of ungodliness. After all, He created man in His image and wants you to reflect His nature.

But there is not only cursing. In our lives there are many evil habits that we do over and over again that cause harm. They have an inner cause and this has to be eliminated. “Create in me a clean heart, O God” (Psalm 51:10), King David rightly prayed, for we cannot cleanse ourselves. But God wants to change and purify unclean, tormented hearts – through faith in Jesus Christ and His death on the cross (Acts 15:9). Then we are able to live a life that finds approval with God.

Today’s reading: 2 Kings 6:1-17 · John 18:33-40
