Lessons in the school of God

For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.
Galatians 6:3

Lessons in the school of God
We are all in danger of overestimating ourselves. That is why God takes us into His school. With Him we learn that we are nothing in ourselves. Only His grace can produce acceptable results in our lives for Him. The Bible tells of some believers who have learned this lesson:

o Jacob leaned on his own cleverness for years. With clever cunning, he obtained the paternal blessing that belonged to the firstborn. He skilfully increased his own flock at the expense of Laban. He spent long years in the school of God until he came to this realisation: “I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies ...” (Genesis 32:10). God had to dislocate his hip joint so that Jacob would become aware of his weakness every day. After that he learned to cling to his God until he concluded his chequered life – as a worshipper.
o Moses was well trained in Egypt. Afterwards he thought he was the suitable saviour of his people. But God could not yet use him in this way. Moses had to tend sheep in the desert for 40 years until God called him to be Israel’s deliverer. Then he confessed: “Who am I ...” (Exodus 3:11). How was he to lead the people out of Egypt into the land of Canaan? At that point he thought nothing of himself, so God was able to help him. In the desert of Sinai, Moses received the divine promise: “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest” (Ex 33:14).
