“Above us is God”

Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles! … For His merciful kindness is great toward us.
Psalm 117:1–2

“Above us is God”
On a bright summer day, we set out early in the morning to climb the Silvrettahorn in the Eastern Alps. During the ascent, our gaze kept going up to the 3,244m summit. The higher we climbed, the better the newly erected summit cross came into view. The fresh wood stood out brilliantly against the deep blue of the sky. And as we reached the summit, we could read the dark, branded inscription, “Above us is God”. As young Christians, such an inscription naturally touched us deeply.

From the heights, an impressive panorama opened up to us in fairly clear conditions, and we were rewarded for the arduous climb.

“Above us is God” means that there is someone “above us” to whom we owe responsibility. If we accept this, it is only for our good. For God has a good plan for our lives. “Above us is God.” He has authority over our lives and He watches over us in His goodness.

Several decades after that summit experience, a recent photo of the same summit cross fell into my hands. The wood was weathered, the inscription difficult to read. And yet, how much the wording had proved true in my life! God was protectively “over me” – every day. He was there with His goodness, even in difficult situations.

Today’s reading: 2 Kings 23:24-37 · Psalms 109:21-31

When You Have A Vision

I was not disobedient to the vision.' Acts 26:19 NIV

When God gives you a vision for your life, you need to know how to:

(1) Hold it. Your vision is governed by a time frame: If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place.' (Habakkuk 2:3 NLT) Some of us can...More

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (113)

He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, let him follow me; and where I am, there my servant will be also. If anyone serves me, him my Father will honour.
John 12:25.26.
