“Everyone practising evil”...

Men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practising evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.

Walk as children of light.

John 3:19–20; Ephesians 5:8

“Everyone practising evil” – here we must think not only of bad vices and gross crimes. This concerns all people who reject God and His light in their lives.

Outwardly they may lead a blameless life, which in some respects is even exemplary. But deep down, every one of us has areas that we would rather keep to ourselves. Guilt and sin always bring shame. The result for many is a hiding from the light of truth and the person who embodies it: Jesus Christ.

The Bible knows that man is quite adept at running from God – from the light. God’s standards of good and evil are then replaced by his own rules. But this is not a solution, ultimately bringing more darkness. We will perish as a result because we will not be able to hide from Jesus permanently. He knows our innermost thoughts. Moreover, one day, after this life is over, we will have to answer to Him.

The good news is that we can prepare for this. We don’t have to deal with the darkness that God uncovers in our lives on our own either. No, Jesus paid for it on the cross. We may bring to Him all our guilt, the smallest and the worst sins, and choose to live in His light.

Today’s reading: Ezekiel 21:1-37 · Psalms 123:1-4
