Overcoming fear

The troubles of my heart have enlarged; bring me out of my distresses!
Psalm 25:17

Overcoming fear
Fears accompany us throughout life. On the one hand this is good, because they make us cautious and protect us from things that might harm us. On the other hand, they paralyse us: we don’t do something because we are afraid of making a mistake.

When David was on the run for years, fear was constantly breathing down his neck. The disciples of the Lord Jesus were afraid to follow Him. Paul had many an inner fear in his ministry.

How can we cope with our fears? Closeness to the Lord helps us to overcome them. David asked for God’s salvation and was able to experience it. To the disciples, the Lord Jesus said as a farewell: “Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). When Paul was particularly challenged one night, the Lord came to him and told him, “Be of good cheer” (Acts 23:11).

How can you overcome fear? Perhaps you are like a little child who wants to jump off a wall but doesn’t dare. Her father calls out: Jump into my arms! Then the child takes courage and dares to jump because she trusts her father to hold her. So you, too, listen to the voice of your Lord: “Do not be afraid; only believe” (Mark 5:36). Give your worries to Him and start thanking Him. This will give you inner peace and security. Entrust your next steps to Him and then go forward courageously.

Today’s reading: Ezekiel 23:36-24:14 · Psalms 126:1-6
