Serve and wait

How you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for His Son from heaven.
1 Thessalonians 1:9–10

Serve and wait
From the young Christians of Thessalonica, we learn what a balanced life of faith is. They had turned to God to serve Him and to wait for His Son Jesus Christ.

o By “serve” it means placing our lives entirely at God’s disposal. Whether we are at work, doing chores around the house or on the road, we want to do everything for the living and true God with whom we have a happy relationship of faith. In doing so, we give Him a response to His great love shown to us when He sent His Son to earth for our salvation and gave Him to die.

o While we live for God, we wait for the coming of His Son. The Lord Jesus promised, “I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:3). This is our firm hope. What will it be when the Lord raptures us to Himself in heaven! Then we will be eternally with Him who loved us and gave Himself for us.
Serving the living God and expecting Jesus Christ – these are the two characteristics of a healthy Christian life. If we put both into practice with the Lord’s help, we will be able to overcome our selfishness, deal properly with earthly things and reject the world’s offers. At the same time, our heart will be happy and content.

Today’s reading: Ezekiel 33:1-33 · Psalms 135:1-12
