The presence and grace of the Lord

The Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Grace be with you.
2 Timothy 4:22

The presence and grace of the Lord
Today’s verse is the very last word of the Apostle Paul in the Bible. He was about to die a martyr’s death and, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, wrote an encouraging letter to his younger co-worker Timothy, ending with this farewell greeting. It came from the pen of an old, experienced servant of the Lord.

Timothy soon had to continue his journey without the apostle. He could no longer ask him for advice. With whom could he now share his concerns in his ministry? Who would stand by him in faith’s battle for the truth?

Paul gave him an answer in his last words: “The Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.” Paul himself had experienced the way human help can fail. When he had to answer to the Roman Emperor, no one stood by him. All Christians abandoned him. Then he had a glorious experience: “But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me” (2 Timothy 4:17).

Therefore, he knew that Timothy was not on his own either. In the trials of faith and the difficulties of service, the Lord Jesus would stand by him. Timothy could count on His presence and grace every day.

This source of help is also available to us, because “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).

Today’s reading: Hosea 2:1-13 · James 1:9-18
