Dramatic rescue (2)

There is none righteous, no, not one; there is none who understands; there is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; they have together become unprofitable; there is none who does good, no, not one.
Romans 3:10–12

Dramatic rescue (2)
November 28, 1951, 7:15 pm. The Teeswood is stranded on a sandbank off the coast of Borkum: cast down – as if struck by death. A gap is already forming between the bridge and the forecastle, which grows larger with each breaker. The ship is in danger of break apart.

Among the sailors stands a young man, soaked to the bone, his eyes wide with fear. He has gone to sea like his father and grandfather before him. He is proud to have been able to help in the galley and serve in the mess hall. He enjoys being on board. But now everything is in turmoil.

He sees the lights of the island of Borkum and the flashes of the lighthouse – steady, tireless, and somehow reassuring. But then he feels the storm tugging at him, sees the huge breakers crashing over the ship, and feels small, helpless and powerless. No, he can’t imagine a boat coming to rescue them in this storm.

Even today’s verse sounds hopeless. It says “none” and “not one” meets God’s standards to receive eternal life – this applies to “all” and all “together”. The description is honest and clear and without any hope. A few verses later it says again: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”. But then the verse continues, “being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:23–24).

So redemption is possible! And this is through Jesus Christ. He is the only way of salvation – for mankind’s hopeless situation!

(to be continued tomorrow)

Today’s reading: Hosea 7:1-16 · James 3:13-18

OFFENDED IN CHRIST?

The Christian race must be run with lots of patience or else it will be bungled midway. If you are inpatient with Gods timing, you will not only get into trouble but may not be able to finish the race. A good number of backsliders derailed from their heavenly track because of impatience. In Matthew 11:6 Jesus...More

Jehovah appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre. And...

Jehovah appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre. And he sat at the tent-door in the heat of the day. And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, three men standing near him.
(Genesis 18:1)

The spiritual elevation of Abraham in Genesis 18 and 19 is something very peculiar. He seems...More

THE HOLY SPIRIT

It is one thing to receive the anointing and another to keep growing on it. There are people who had the anointing, but today, everything has virtually ebbed out. It is possible to connect with the Holy Spirit and to continue to flow in the power of the anointing even at increasing levels. If this is your desire,...More

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More
