Thoughts on the Gospel of John (174)

O righteous Father! The world has not known You, but I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me. And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.
John 17:25–26

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (174)
Never had there been such a reliable witness of any thing or person as Jesus Christ was of God the Father. But the world did not recognise the Father, and it did not accept the testimony of Jesus, increasingly rebelling against it.

In this context, the Son of God does not use the salutation “Holy Father” as in verse 11, where it is about the preservation of believers, but He says “Righteous Father”. One day the world will experience God’s justice because of its sin.

The disciples, on the other hand, had recognised in Jesus the messenger of the Father, they had received Him and they had followed Him. To them the Lord had been able to make known the name of the Father. In verse 6 He had spoken of revealing the name of the Father. Every characteristic of God the Father became visible in the life of Jesus. But it was not only through His life that He made known who the Father is, but also through His words. And these words would be heard through the apostles after His ascension.

Everything was to serve the purpose that the love of the Father, which was in all its fullness in the Son, would also be “in them”. Christ was conscious of His Father’s love hour by hour in His life here on earth; it governed His life. And the blessedness of this love is likewise available to all who belong to Him.

If the Father’s love dwells in us, then we will be able to represent Jesus Christ in our lives. He is to be seen “in” us.

YOU CAN BE HIS WITNESS

As a bona fide member of the Kingdom of God, you must be a proof of His power to save. Matthew 1:21 says Jesus shall save His people from sin.

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
