The Bagwido, a tribe of people in New Guinea, had already heard some things from the Bible. They knew that their sin separated them from God and that they were unable to keep God’s commandments. They realised that even the sacrifices they brought couldn’t satisfy God.

But then the Bagwido learned how the Son of God had become man and how He had gone to the cross to be sacrificed for the sins of lost people. The whole scene on the hill of Calvary, up to the sacrificial death of the Lord Jesus Christ, stood vividly before their eyes. One of them explained what happened next:

“When I heard Jesus say, ‘It is finished,’ I realised: This is something we have never heard before. ... Do you hear that? We have never heard this before! His work is finished. There is nothing left to do. The free gift is there, just waiting for us to accept it.”

One woman acknowledged, “He bore so much pain, suffering and burden for me. My heart weeps when I think of what He has done for me. He has completely cleansed me from my sin. He has washed away everything through His blood. My heart cannot stop thinking about it. ... I am so happy about the free gift Jesus has given me.”

Yes, the sacrificial work of Jesus Christ is perfect and final. Nothing can or needs to be added to it. “It is finished!” This benefits everyone – if they will only repent, believe in the Son of God, and claim His substitutionary sacrifice for themselves in faith.
