The first man

God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes.
Ecclesiastes 7:29

The first man
God created Adam and Eve pure and sinless. In this state of innocence, however, they were vulnerable to evil.

The Creator also endowed them with spiritual qualities so that they could communicate with God and have a relationship with Him.

As creatures, human beings were responsible from the beginning to obey their Creator. To test this obedience, God gave them a single commandment: “Of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Genesis 2:17).

In the form of a serpent, the devil appeared in the Garden of Eden and seduced Eve. She fell for his cunning deception and ate of the forbidden fruit. Then she gave it to her husband, who also ate. Through this transgression of God’s commandment, humans became sinful and corrupt. They were no longer innocent but now their minds devised many evil schemes.

Because they passed on their corrupt nature to their descendants, what God says about the human heart in Jeremiah 17:9 applies to all of them: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” There is nothing people can do about this sad state of affairs. The statement of Jesus Christ is clear: “You must be born again” (John 3:7). Only through this new birth is it possible for humans to be fundamentally transformed for good.

Today’s reading: Amos 1:1-15 · Proverbs 22:9-16

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
