Yes, Lord!

And she said, Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.
Matthew 15:27

Yes, Lord!
A Canaanite woman asked for help for her daughter. But at first she was rejected by the Saviour because He had only come to the people of Israel. He made this clear to her using the image of the dogs that shouldn’t eat the children’s bread: a rather harsh response, it seems. But the all-knowing One wanted to bring to light the attitude of this woman. She said, “Yes, Lord”! With that she accepted the judgment and the action of the Lord Jesus. She knew she was unworthy but clung to His grace, as her further words in today’s verse show. This response evokes His high praise, “O woman, great is your faith” (Matthew 15:28).

The Saviour took great joy in this “yes”. Hadn’t He spoken similarly Himself shortly before, when He had accepted the Father’s will for Himself? “I thank You, Father, … that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight” (Matthew 11:25–26). He accepted the rejection by His people and now wanted to turn to the weary and burdened. He had already prophetically accepted His rejection in Jeremiah 10:19: “Truly this is an infirmity, and I must bear it.”

Israel’s rejection of the Saviour opened the way of salvation for people from the nations. Isn’t this illustrated by the fact that He finally healed the daughter of the Canaanite woman?

Today’s reading: Genesis 25:1-18 · Psalms 9:11-20
