Fear – it has not only been widespread since...

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.
Psalm 46:1–2

Fear – it has not only been widespread since September 11, 2001, or during the Coronavirus pandemic of 2020–21. Ever since man was driven out of the Garden of Eden, fear has accompanied him. Every day we are confronted with an abundance of fears and threats. Even our civilised, cultured society knows fear of life in the face of the problems of mankind and the hopelessness of the individual. The rapid spread of a coronavirus has once again drastically shown us how vulnerable the globalised world is. Perhaps for a long time we thought that we were reasonably safe in our homes and cities. But now we have had to learn that it is not so.

Maybe God wants to remind us once more how transient everything on earth is. Through these facts, God patiently – often very clearly – speaks to us to remind us that we need to get our lives right with Him. For He has appointed a day when Jesus Christ will judge the world, and then there will be no turning back.

One day, I get into a conversation with an elderly couple about this topic. They too have their fears for the future of humanity. Then the man suddenly says, “Whoever believes in Jesus has nothing to fear. The Lord will not leave us.” He firmly believes in this.

How right this elderly man is! He who knows himself secure in faith in the Lord Jesus Christ has nothing to fear. He can say with David,

“Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me”.

Psalm 23:4

Today’s reading: Genesis 30:1-24 · Psalms 17:1-7

One of themselves, a prophet of their own, has said, Cretans are always liarsThis testimony is true; for which cause rebuke them severely, that they may be sound in the faith.

Today God is calling you (3)

I have prayed for you, that your faith will not fail.' Luke 22:32 NASB

God wants you to do His will, but you'll never reach the place of spiritual maturity in which you're free of Satan. You can overcome him, but you can't eliminate him. Look at Peter. He had only one gear: overdrive. He was always...More
