How much technology has been copied from...

Thus says God the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it, and spirit to those who walk on it: … I am the Lord, that is My name; and My glory I will not give to another.
Isaiah 42:5, 8

How much technology has been copied from nature over the years! It’s amazing how the fruit of the burdock hooks itself into the fur of animals to spread its seed. Industry has been using the same principle since the 1950s, for example in fasteners for sportswear. How does it work? Elastic, plastic hooks join together but can be released again by pulling firmly.

“Velcro” is the name of this practical solution that nature has developed. Or shouldn’t we rather say, the Creator? Because nature itself doesn’t have the capacity for intelligent and conscious decisions that are necessary to accomplish something like this. Unfortunately, nature is often spoken of nowadays as if it were an intelligent and omnipotent being!

Surveys show that sadly many scientists imagine the origin of the universe and life completely without a creator God. With this belief, however, many questions remain unanswered. But we can find the answers if we open the Bible, the Word of God.

The Bible speaks of a Creator who loves us and created this wonderful world for us. He wants us to give Him and no one else the glory for all His wonders, even if it is such a small wonder as that of the burdock.

Oh Lord, my God, when I, in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made …
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
C. Boberg (1859–1940)

Today’s reading: Genesis 50:1-14 · Psalms 36:1-12
