How bitter water becomes sweet

Now when they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter.
Exodus 15:23

How bitter water becomes sweet
After the Israelites had joyfully sung the song of redemption on the shore of the Red Sea, the wilderness journey began. Shortly afterwards, they experienced a bitter disappointment. They wandered through the desert for three days without finding any water. When they finally reached the first oasis, the water there was bitter and undrinkable.

As His redeemed, we also have similar bitter experiences when we seek to follow the Lord Jesus after our conversion. We perceive the world around us as a desert that no longer has anything attractive for our hearts. Moreover, we experience ridicule and rejection when we confess the Lord and align our lives with the Word of God. Thus, the path of following the Lord can become difficult and arduous.

For the Israelites, the bitter water became sweet when Moses threw in a piece of wood that God had shown him. We also have a “piece of wood” that we must bring into our situation so that our joy in following the Lord Jesus returns: it is the cross of Calvary.

Let us consider what the Saviour did for us there! How deeply He suffered for us! His love even unto death encourages us to overcome bitter experiences. Let us also remember what the people did to our Lord there! How dreadfully they mocked Him! We shouldn’t make compromises with the world that dealt with Jesus Christ in this way.

Today’s reading: Daniel 1:1-8 · Psalms 37:12-20

HOW PERSUADED?

In 2 Timothy 4:10, Demas - a co-labourer with Paul was floored by his love for the world. He became a victim of comfort. Today, many people are also becoming prayerless and shifting their or trust from God to uncertain riches. They are now tending towards the belief that money can fix everything. If you are in such...More

A LESSON FROM GOLIATH

At the first sight of David, Goliath despised him. He was amazed that the children of Israel could find no other man to fight him than a young boy. As if that was not enough, Goliath did not see any conventional weapon of war on David. So he asked, "Am I a dog?" The first lesson we have to learn from this story as...More

Always Be Humble

Who am Ithat you have brought me this far?' 2 Samuel 7:18 (NIV 2011 Edition)
A MEMBER of parliament took his little daughter to visit Westminster Abbey. As she stood looking up at its magnificent columns, her father asked, What do you think, sweetheart?' With childlike candour she replied, I was...More

Forgive And Move On (2)

Anyone who starts ploughing and keeps looking back isn't worth a thing to God's Kingdom!' Luke 9:62 CEV

If you're wise, you'll do four things:

(1) Focus on the road ahead. By looking in the rear-view mirror instead of what's up ahead, you'll end up in a ditch. Focus on the fact you've...More
