The Southern Cross

Then God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years.
Genesis 1:14

The Southern Cross
When European sailors crossed the southern seas in the 16th century, they discovered a special constellation in the sky: the Southern Cross. They mentally connected four stars to form a cross, which served as a navigation aid because the vertical axis points to the southern celestial pole.

This cross in the sky reminds us of the cross on earth on which Jesus Christ hung 2,000 years ago. He died there as a saviour for lost people.

Today, the Southern Cross is still an extraordinary constellation for several reasons:

o In its central left area there is a bright cluster of stars called the “Jewel Box”, which, according to current knowledge, is unique. This “Jewel Box” can be understood as a symbol of the glory of heaven. It is the eternal home of all who have accepted the Lord Jesus as Saviour and have thereby become children of God. In His divine light, an incomprehensible glory awaits them.

o Next to the Southern Cross you can see the “Coalsack”. Why this name? Because the light of the stars that are behind this dark cloud cannot penetrate this darkness. The “Coalsack” can be seen as a symbol of hell. This is where all those who have not acknowledged their guilt before God and have not accepted His offer of salvation will find themselves.

Today’s reading: Job 2:1-13 · Acts 5:25-32

GOD HAS A SUBSTITUTE

One thing we need to learn in today's reading is that God always has a substitute. If God says He wants you, rejoice! However, be careful, because even as He is choosing you, He has already prepared a substitute.
