Cleaving to God

My soul follows close behind You; Your right hand upholds me.
Psalm 63:8

Cleaving to God
David wrote Psalm 63 in the desert. Surrounded by a waterless wasteland, he had an inner thirst for his God. In this inhospitable place, he remembered the sanctuary and longed for nothing more than to see God’s power and glory. He waited to be delivered from his enemies and felt secure in the strong hand of God that held him up. In today’s verse, he describes his attachment to God.

God also knows our lives, our circumstances and our needs. Because He loves us inexpressibly, He upholds us and takes care of us. This is God’s part in our life of faith. Now the question remains: Does our soul also cling to Him? Do we live daily in the awareness of our dependence on Him? Does our heart long for Him?

When we cultivate a living relationship with God through prayer and remain dependent on Him, we experience in our lives how much we need Him every day and how He helps us. The peace of God will then guard our hearts and minds.

In the Bible we also find wrong attachment. The people of Israel attached themselves to the idol Baal-Peor and aroused the wrath of God (Numbers 25:1–3). The younger son in Luke 15 attached himself to one of the citizens of the land and ended up among the pigs. God can help us to attach our souls to nothing and no one else but Himself alone.

Today’s reading: Job 35:1-16 · Acts 16:26-40

LIFE IN ABUNDANCE 1

Under normal circumstances, no human being desires to be a nonentity. The various forces in the world however, are responsible for many people spending their entire life amounting to nothing and dwelling in the valley of not-well-to-do persons. The Almighty God Himself in making man did not intend for him to be a...More

A spiritual treasure had been entrusted to the apostle Paul that he wished to share with the Christians in Rome. It did not come from his own abilities or knowledge. What he wished to impart to them he had himself received...More
