The Parable of the Good Samaritan (6)

On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you. So which of these three do you think was neighbour to him who fell among the thieves? And he said, he who showed mercy on him. Then Jesus said to him, go and do likewise.
Luke 10:35–37

The Parable of the Good Samaritan (6)
After the Good Samaritan has given the man who fell among the robbers good lodging in an inn, he makes provision for him. He pays the innkeeper two denarii and promises to also cover all further expenses for his care until he returns. This “coming again” symbolically indicates that Jesus Christ will soon return for all people who have believed and do believe in Him. Jesus Himself will come again to take all true believers to Himself in heaven (cf. John 14:3; 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17).

The parable of the Good Samaritan answers the lawyer’s question, “Who is my neighbour?” The answer that emerges from this account is, “My neighbour is anyone who needs my help.” And this is true without any qualification.

But the Lord Jesus now changes perspective and asks the lawyer who the neighbour of the person in need of help is. Does He perhaps want to make it clear that all people are in need of help and that He wants to be their Saviour? He has deep compassion for each of us. He wants to take away the burden of our sins, bind up our wounds, and give us joy and comfort.

And when we have experienced His mercy, it will spur us on to help others, so that many more may experience the mercy of God.

YOU CAN BE HIS WITNESS

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
