All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
Romans 3:23–24

For free
The man who stops at the Bible stand is from Austria. As a retiree, he has been travelling to see something of the world. He has just returned from the USA and Canada. He has been collecting souvenirs everywhere. Now he asks if we can also give him a souvenir of the Bible stand, “But please for free, because I have money for travelling but not for buying souvenirs.”

We gladly give him a calendar as a gift. At the same time, we point out to him that God also wants to give him something for free. When the man looks at us questioningly, we point to the Bible verse on the wall of our stand, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”

After trying to explain this biblical statement to the visitor, he asks, “What am I supposed to do with justification by grace? I have never done anything wrong.” That ends the conversation, because the Bible has nothing to offer such people.

The gospel of God’s grace is directed at the unrighteous and sinners. Only when people acknowledge the divine judgment on themselves and admit their guilt can the Lord Jesus save them. However, as long as they hold onto their self-righteous view of themselves, the offer of God’s grace is of no use to them.

Today’s reading: Isaiah 5:1-17 · Acts 22:1-11
