Forsaken by God

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?
Matthew 27:46

Forsaken by God
“No, I cannot understand how God abandoned Jesus on the cross. Wasn’t that mean?” Anita is visibly upset.

For some time now, we’ve been talking occasionally about God, creation, and the Bible. Yes, Anita believes in God but she doesn’t understand why He chose to reveal and show Himself in the Bible and in Jesus Christ. Anita has her own ideas about God and His nature, believing that human beings have a fundamentally good core. She strongly rejects the contrary statement of the Bible, that sin has touched and changed humans in their deepest being so that they now stand guilty and lost before God.

And now, surprisingly, she asks this question. Wasn’t it mean, then, that God left His own Son Jesus Christ all alone on the cross for three hours and gave no answer to His cry?

“No, it wasn’t mean,” I begin.

“But just imagine. Don’t you have parents? Wasn’t that really terrible?” she counters.

“Yes, Anita, it was terrible, but it happened out of love for you! God is holy and just. That’s why the substitutionary death of the Lord Jesus is the only way through which sinful people like you and me can come into a relationship with Him. Would God have done such a thing if we were basically good after all?”

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God.

1 Peter 3:18

Today’s reading: Isaiah 23:1-24:13 · Acts 27:27-44

Today God is calling you (3)

I have prayed for you, that your faith will not fail.' Luke 22:32 NASB

God wants you to do His will, but you'll never reach the place of spiritual maturity in which you're free of Satan. You can overcome him, but you can't eliminate him. Look at Peter. He had only one gear: overdrive. He was always...More
