Having light and being light

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Psalm 119:105

Having light and being light
Many mothers ask their children when they want to set off on their bikes after dark, “Do you have a light that works?” This question usually annoys the children because just at that moment when they have to leave, the lights don’t work and there’s no time to fix them.

I remember once when I was a boy, I was riding my bike without lights and I promptly collided with a car. It didn’t have any serious consequences, but it was still reckless to ride without lights because they offer twofold protection:

1. You can see where you’re going in the dark.

2. You can be seen by other road users.

If lighting is essential for cycling, then light is virtually indispensable in real life. Here too it should fulfil two functions:

o We need the light of the Word of God to help us see our way in a dark world. The Lord Jesus says in John 12:35, “He who walks in darkness does not know where he is going.” Therefore, it is essential that we possess this light and use it on our journey of faith.
o At the same time, we should be a light for our fellow human beings so that they are able to recognise the right path to take. In Philippians 2:15 we are asked to shine like lights in the world to give guidance to those around us.

Today’s reading: Isaiah 33:1-34:17 · Hebrews 2:11-18

NEGATIVE LIVING

Life comprises of positive and negative elements. As a matter of necessity, it is not good for someone to opt for negative living. The fact that Jesus Christ was destined to die for the sin of the whole world does not exonerate Judas Iscariot from the evil that led him to the idea of betraying the King of Glory....More
