Jesus No. 1

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, … all things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
Colossians 1:15–17

Jesus No. 1
It’s Wednesday morning and I’m on my way to work. In my tiredness, I vaguely note the license plate on the white van in front of me, and then I have to look twice: it reads, unmistakably, “JESUS NO. 1”! The mandatory license plate is located some distance above it. Even further up, a label on the back door reveals that the van belongs to a craftsman’s business.

“Jesus No. 1” – what a statement! Jesus Christ is said to be the “firstborn over all creation”. The “firstborn” is the one who has the highest rank and to whom everything belongs. Today’s verse justifies this by saying that through the Lord Jesus all things in the heavens and on earth were created. However, not only were all things created through Him, they were also created for Him.

In addition, the Lord Jesus is also “before all things”. This means that He is the most powerful, the greatest and the highest-ranking person in the universe. At the same time, all things also exist “through Him”. Jesus Christ continually ensures that the whole universe is sustained – from the smallest living thing to the largest galaxy.

When we use our creativity, time and energy to make something, we do so in order to derive some benefit and enjoyment from it. It’s the same with the Lord Jesus. The purpose of creation is that it pleases Him. And therefore, our existence acquires deep meaning only when we submit to His good will and He has the first place in our lives.

Today’s reading: Isaiah 38:1-16 · Hebrews 4:10-16

YOU CAN BE HIS WITNESS

As a bona fide member of the Kingdom of God, you must be a proof of His power to save. Matthew 1:21 says Jesus shall save His people from sin.

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
