The view towards our heavenly home

We do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
2 Corinthians 4:18

The view towards our heavenly home
Warwick Castle is one of the finest medieval castles in England. This magnificent fortress is situated on the banks of the Avon. In a nearby village, I struck up a conversation with a local. “Can you see the castle from your house?” I asked him. “Sure,” he says, “especially in winter when the leaves have fallen and the view can be seen through the bare trees.” The abundance of foliage in summer hides the castle – during the trees’ dormancy it reappears.

Isn’t life similar for us? In good times, when everything is thriving and successful, it’s easy for our well-being and success to obscure our view of imperishable, eternal treasures. As a result, we lose sight of the hope of the Lord’s coming. When we become aware of this, we should ask God to free us inwardly from earthly things so that we can once again look forward to heaven.

However, it may also be that autumn and winter have come into our lives. Difficulties at work, family problems or health issues can trouble us. They are like the frost that makes the leaves fall from the trees. Aren’t these trials often a means in God’s hands to open up our view of the invisible and eternal? We then look upwards more and long for our heavenly home.

Today’s reading: Isaiah 41:1-29 · Hebrews 6:10-20
