Blood and water

But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.
John 19:33–34

Blood and water
It was a significant scene when a soldier took a spear and pierced the side of the Lord Jesus, who had died on the cross, and blood and water flowed out. The disciple John saw it and later recorded it in writing in his Gospel.

In his letter he also explains that the blood and water have a spiritual meaning. They speak of the sacrificial work of the Lord Jesus being completely sufficient to save sinners and make them new people. It takes both the blood and the water to cleanse us completely.

The blood is needed to atone for our sins before God and to cleanse us from our transgressions. All the evil and wrong that we have done, and sadly will still do, had to be put away before the eyes of a holy God. The means for this is the blood of the Lord Jesus. John writes, “The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7).
The water is needed for our moral cleansing. Through personal faith in the Lord Jesus, we receive a new life in which we no longer need to sin. Because the Saviour died, God can bring about new birth in us and give us eternal life. This divine life makes us capable of living in the power of the Holy Spirit for the joy of God. So, it is now possible for us to say no to sin and do what pleases God.

Today’s reading: Isaiah 42:1-17 · Hebrews 7:1-17

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
