Two weary, thirsty and lonely people

Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, Give Me a drink.
John 4:6–7

Two weary, thirsty and lonely people
God’s ways lead a weary, thirsty and lonely woman into the presence of the Saviour, who is also weary, thirsty and alone.

o She is weary because she lives in sin, while He is weary from His journey in the service of love.
o Her sins make her a lonely woman, while His love makes Him a lonely man.
o Love brings Jesus Christ to where sin has brought her.

Similarly, His love will later bring Him to the place where sin would have brought us – to the cross. He experiences unspeakable loneliness there, abandoned by friend and brother. He looks for compassion and doesn’t find it, and for comforters and there are none. Betrayed by a false disciple, denied by a true one, abandoned by everyone else – so He must endure the terrible loneliness of the cross. He is lifted up between heaven and earth, rejected by men and forsaken by God.

What leads Him into such loneliness? His love for lost people – a love that cannot be quenched by water or drowned by floods.

When people accept such love by believing in the crucified and risen Saviour, they are saved. He gives them eternal life so that their spiritual thirst can be quenched. He promises to be with them so that they will never be alone again.

Today’s reading: Isaiah 49:1-13 · Hebrews 11:1-7

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
