The house key

My sympathy is stirred. … I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely.
Hosea 11:8; 14:4

The house key
Midnight had passed. Silently George took a key from his pocket and entered the silent house. He went up the stairs and opened a door. Everything was just as he remembered it from before: the bed made, pyjamas on the chair. This had been his room until he left his parents’ house five years earlier.

After his mother died, the promises he had made to her had evaporated. He had left to live as he pleased. Several times his father had tried in vain to reach him, but the letters came back with the note “Unknown”.

Finally, however, his father had been able to locate his address, and one day a small package had reached George. What had he found inside? The house key he had just used.

His father had heard nothing of his return home. In the morning he opened his son’s bedroom door as he had done every day since he had sent him the key. He was greeted with the words, “Father, I am so bad. Can you forgive me?” – “Yes, George. But have you asked God for forgiveness? – “I have, Father. And He has forgiven me.”

There is a house, the “Father’s house” of God, into which no man can readily enter, because the holy and righteous God cannot admit a sinner there. But God places a “key” in your hand.

If you use this key – by repenting toward God and accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour – you will come to know God as your loving Father.

Today’s reading: Isaiah 52:1-15 · Hebrews 12:12-17

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
