Jesus changes people

Then they came to Jesus and saw the one who had been demon-possessed and had the legion, sitting and clothed and in his right mind.
Mark 5:15

Jesus changes people
The US preacher Dr Harry Ironside was challenged by an opponent of Christianity to debate the topic, “Agnosticism versus Christianity”. Agnosticism holds the view that it is impossible to know whether God exists.

Ironside accepted but set the following condition: that his opponent had to bring two people whose lives had been ruined before – and who had subsequently been brought out of their misery by living an anti-Christian life. Ironside himself promised that in return he would bring one hundred people who had led similarly broken lives but who, through the power of Jesus Christ, had experienced new meaning and left their troubled past lives behind.

What happened? How did the challenger react? His response was telling: he withdrew the invitation to debate.

Our Bible verse today tells the story of a man who was possessed by a demon and had developed such great strength that he could even break his iron shackles. He spent his nights in cemeteries, screaming and inflicting injuries upon himself. Suddenly one day he was sitting quietly, dressed and perfectly normal at the feet of Jesus Christ. What had happened? Jesus had totally changed him!

Such extreme cases may be the rarity, but each of us longs for change in some form or desires to get things in our lives under control. Perhaps we are burdened by a heavy and dark past and the fact that mistakes cannot be undone. Jesus Christ can certainly help us! Through faith in Him we become new people with new courage to face life.

Only Jesus Christ can bring about such a change.

Today’s reading: Ecclesiastes 1:1-11 · Mark 4:10-20
